On April 29, 2022, the Ministry of Education issued the Work Program for Strengthening the Construction of Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutral Higher Education Talent Cultivation System, proposing to strengthen green and low-carbon education, promote the transformation and upgrading of professions, and accelerate the cultivation of urgently needed and scarce talents.

On September 27, 2022, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announced the newly revised Dictionary of Occupational Classification of the People's Republic of China, in which there are 134 new green occupations, accounting for about 8% of the total number of occupations, such as carbon emission manager and carbon sink trader, all of which are newly included in this occupation.

It is foreseeable that under the stimulation of a number of policy initiatives, the green "dual-carbon" field will be in an upward stage in the next 10-15 years, more and more colleges and universities will set up carbon neutral research fields, more and more colleges and universities will set up carbon neutral related majors, and more and more young students will become the backbone of the process of advancing our country's carbon neutrality. More and more young students will become the backbone of promoting the carbon neutral process in China.

In addition, major universities are also cooperating with each other and forming teams to cultivate carbon neutral professionals.

In April 2021, Tongji University led a group of eight universities in East China to form the Yangtze River Delta University Alliance for Sustainable Development and released the "Initiative on Promoting Carbon Peak and Carbon-Neutral Universities", which advocates strengthening inter-university cooperation and forming cross-disciplinary teams, targeting the frontiers of science and technology and key areas, as well as developing carbon neutral professionals. So, what are the new majors related to "dual carbon"?

According to the relevant documents of the Ministry of Education, according to the filing and approval results of undergraduate majors in ordinary colleges and universities in 2022 and 2021 announced by the Ministry of Education, the new majors related to "dual-carbon" include carbon storage science and engineering, hydrogen energy science and engineering, sustainable energy, intelligent energy engineering, biomass energy and materials, resource and environmental data engineering, wetland protection and restoration, and so on. Engineering, Wetland Protection and Restoration, etc.

Among them, there are more schools that set up carbon storage science and engineering majors. Four universities, Chongqing University, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and China University of Geosciences (Beijing), are the first batch of universities in China that have been approved to specialize in carbon storage science and engineering, and they have enrolled students for the society in 2022.

China University of Petroleum (East China), North China Electric Power University, Chang'an University, North China University of Science and Technology, Northeast Petroleum University and Southwest Petroleum University have become the second batch of universities in China approved to major in carbon storage science and engineering, and plan to start enrolling undergraduates one after another in the fall of 2023.

In addition, the majors of digital economy, building electricity and intelligence, new energy science and engineering, new energy automobile engineering, new energy materials and devices, ecology, energy internet engineering, energy chemical engineering, etc., are also hot spots for the record.
