With this tenacity, Gu Guobiao eventually obtained a national loan of 1.6 million yuan. At that time, there were a few hundred people in the electrician's office, with less than 1 million yuan a year for research and running expenses. “Now that I think about it, we were really bold. At that time, the salary was only how much money, and we actually wanted a loan of 1.6 million yuan. I was probably the first person to raise research funds by taking out a loan.” Gu Guobiao lamented.
With this funding, two 10,000-kilowatt evaporative-cooled hydroelectric generator sets finally landed in Dazhai Hydropower Station in Yunnan Province. This is China's independent research and development, put into industrial application of the first self-circulating evaporative cooling water turbine generator, because it has not seen, even the senior veteran engineers in the first start-up is also doubly nervous.
Eventually, time proved the safety and reliability of evaporative cooling technology. Today, these two generating units have been operating safely for more than 40 years, and have won the first prize of the 1987 Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of the 1988 National Science and Technology Progress Award.
With the foundation of safe operation of Dazhai Hydropower Station, the evaporative cooling technology team has secured another project to build a 50,000 kW hydro generator at Flintstone Power Station in Ankang, Shaanxi. In order to ensure the accuracy of each link, the whole team worked for 12 hours at a time on the construction site and ate directly against the wall. Even the construction workers in the plant could not recognize that these grimy “workers” were scientists from Beijing.
Evaporative cooling technology, “safe and efficient” image so that more and more projects to come forward, but the group of scientists always remember that the biggest dream in their hearts - to the Three Gorges Project.
In 1994, the Three Gorges Project was officially started. Gu Guobiao proposed the use of evaporative cooling technology to the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee.
The committee's experts posed a challenge: “I've learned about your technology; you've got a 50,000-kilowatt generator, but this is a 700,000-kilowatt one for us. If you can do a 400,000- to 500,000-kilowatt motor in four or five years, and it doesn't break down in two years, we'll definitely use it.”
As it happened, a 400,000-kilowatt generator was to be started at the Lijiaxia Hydropower Station in Qinghai, which was the largest hydroelectric generator unit in China at that time in terms of stand-alone capacity.
At that time, the No. 1 machine of the Lijiaxia generator had already been installed, the No. 2 and No. 3 machines were in production, and only the No. 4 machine had possibilities. Gu Guobiao wrote a thick stack of proposals on the application of stator winding evaporative cooling technology for the Lijiaxia hydropower station generator, and spent 30,000 yuan on copying materials alone . With the good reputation of the previous project, they finally succeeded in fighting for this opportunity, and became one of the “Ninth Five-Year” National Science and Technology Tackling Program.
In fact, from 50,000 kilowatts to 400,000 kilowatts, the evaporative cooling technology team is a small challenge, routinely, another 200,000 kilowatts should be developed, but this means that it will take another 10 years or so, the evaporative cooling technology towards the Three Gorges will not be realized.
“I was holding my breath, I must apply evaporative cooling technology to the Three Gorges project!” Gu Guobiao said.
In order to successfully complete the task, the evaporative cooling technology team fought night and day in the front line of the project. 1999 end, Lijiaxia 400,000 kilowatts of evaporative cooling turbine generator was finally successfully developed.
Gu Guobiao still remembers that on the day of the official operation of the Lijiaxia Hydropower Station, although in the magnificent National Forest Park, but simply do not care to enjoy the scenery, until the project was declared a success, only to find themselves “legs are weak”.
